Seems like the only people that own your carvings are your relatives? And only because you gave the carvings as gifts?

My story is like that. My name is Chuck Hall, and I have been a woodcarver/sculptor for decades. I’ve studied at schools, taught others, and fallen in and out of love with woodcarving a dozen times. 

I tried all the shows, the markets, shows, and online too. Maybe I was expecting too much, but still, when my wife became ill with ovarian cancer, I dropped my chisels for about 2 years. There simply wasn’t enough going on in my woodcarving hobby to keep my attention. There was little to no income.

Now my wife is much better, thank God! I am back in the studio again. But, while I was away, I pondered the question of ‘WHY’….. why aren’t woodcarvers a more respected and profitable bunch? My research pointed out three things that we can all agree upon.

1. Imported competition: These carving are generally not bad at all, but they come from places where the cost of living is darn low…. too low for us  here at home to compete against a skilled artist from another country.
2. Woodcarving is now a commodity: Much like beans and nails, these cheap imports are found in every art store, consignment shop, tourist joint, and anywhere else that can sell them. They are cheap, and you can’t compete with that price point.
3. We give away our time and talent: Really…. don’t you agree? Because of #1 and #2, we woodcarvers are forced to carve for cheap or become the next great artist of fame and fortune. That last option is a wonderful one, but that comes much later in our hobbies.
